Suffrage Presentation

100 Years of Suffrage – But the Struggle for Equal Rights for Women Goes On

In 2020 America will celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. But are women in America where they could be—or should be—after one hundred years of suffrage?

AAUW-LB invites you to a stimulating analysis of that question by Dr. Kimberly Salter the Executive Vice President of the National Women’s History Project and past president of CA NOW. In her presentation, Celebrating Women Suffrage 1920-2020, Dr. Salter will detail the enormous efforts of the suffragists and the empowering gifts they left to us. She’ll also remind us that the need still exists to carry forth the drive for civil rights and a more inclusive democracy that the suffragists started.

The presentation will include information about Vision 2020, a nationwide collaboration from all corners of American life—women’s groups, corporations, universities, non-profit groups—to celebrate this important 100th anniversary. One of Vision 2020’s goals is to make August 26th, currently the annual Women’s Equality Day, a national holiday. “Everybody is on board,” says Dr. Salter, obviously delighted by the widespread support for the national holiday proposal.

As Dr. Salter emphasizes, women voting is more important now than ever. Vision 2020’s goal is to register every woman who is eligible to vote. As she says, ”We know that if every eligible woman votes, we will have a very different look in Congress, the Senate and the White House.
